What is barefoot dance and how are the sessions organised?

We love to dance and so we hire a church hall (St Matthews, Clifton Road, Exeter) where we can create the space to do just that.  People of all ages and all fitness levels are most welcome.  Everyone helps out as there are no paid organisers, although some people take a more active role than others.  For example, Laurence keeps the website and mailing list together and Karen looks after any money we collect and pays the bills.

People will wear loose comfortable clothing and bring water to drink (or there is water available from the kitchen).

People will arrive anytime between 7:30pm (helping set up) and 8:30pm.  We have a warm up to music which begins around 7:45pm and runs until 8:30pm.  People will warm up and dance as they wish .... there is no pressure to move in any particular way.  Some will rest on the floor while others are moving about the hall.  There is no talking in the dance space.  In that sense it is not a social event.

Around 8:30pm we will sit in a circle and one of the group will hold the space.  This is a time for people to speak if they want to, to make announcements, to meet as a group.

From 8:45pm until sometime around 10pm we dance to music. As with the warm up there are no steps to learn.  It is very much about expressing yourself with movement. It is about being true to yourself and being with what arises.  It is not about looking good or performing.  People will dance on their own or with each other.  No one speaks during the dance sessions.  I think of it as a moving meditation but everyone has their own ideas.  There is no instruction; you become your own teacher!  You do not have to do what everyone else is doing- it is most important to listen to yourself and your own body and do what is right for you.

We finish in silence and then come together as a group again before clearing up and going home.

Sometimes we invite teachers to lead and inspire us and they will structure the sessions accordingly .

Please do come and share our delight in dance. Better still, contact us first so we can tell you what to expect and answer any queries.
